No joke, I’m [helping] break the internet silence here for a coffee bribe (though Katrina beat me). Nothing class-related, these are just my thoughts while packing today and preparing to leave.
It’s hard to leave my family (even if only for a couple months). I’m really close to my little siblings. The youngest is too little to understand travel and (I’m told) spends a lot of time knocking on my door and asking if I’m sick when I’m gone. I’m spending most of today getting together summer reading lists for the kids and making sure they know how to use Skype and Text+.
I’m incredibly excited to see Gdańsk, Kraków, Zakopane… actually all of Poland. I’ve fallen in love with this country and its history over the past year as I’ve become friends with a Polish-American family and I can’t wait to learn more and finally be there. I’ll admit, I’m excited also just to be traveling. That feeling of freedom in a new city is indescribable—no computer, not much decision on what to wear, no car, and no responsibilities (at least, not being responsible for my family).
I’m a tad anxious about having over-packed, about my ancient phone giving out (with my beloved GPS), about deciding to bring a nice camera and having to care for it, about tears at the airport (I’m never emotional and never in public).
As an artist, I’m giddy at a new sketchbook I’m packing and new cities to paint. As an independent introvert, I’m freaking out about the thought of spending so much time with people. Yet at the same time, I’m honestly really looking forward to getting to know everyone on the trip better. I’ll be seeing you all in Poland soon! Here begins our journey. Taylorann
